Jennifer Capriati has been a professional tennis player since 1990. Capriati won the 2002 ESPY for Best Comeback Athlete for her play in 2001, beating out several other athletes including basketball player Michael Jordan. She was voted the January 2002 Player of the Month by the International Tennis Writers' Association (ITWA), named the 2001 World Singles Champion by the International Tennis Federation, and was the recipient of the Laureus Sports Award for Female Athlete of the Year in May 2002 for her performance in 2001. She was named the 2001 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year, the 2001 Reuters Sportswoman of the Year, the 2001 Sportswoman of the Year by Sports Illustrated Women magazine; voted 2001 ITF World Champion and received the 2001 Laureus World Comeback of the Year award. She was named the TENNIS Magazine 1999 Comeback Player of the Year; received the 1999 Eurosport Spirit of Cooperation award and was the recipient of 1996 Sanex WTA Tour Comeback Player of the Year award. Capriati was 1991 TENNIS Magazine Most Improved Female Player; recipient of 1990 Sanex WTA Tour Most Impressive Newcomer Award and 1990 TENNIS Magazine/Rolex Watch Female Rookie of the Year; 1989 World Tennis and TENNIS Magazine Junior Player of the Year and recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee as Athlete of the Year in the Sport of Tennis for 1989. She went on to win a gold medal in Barcelona in the 1992 Olympics. Her highest ranking in women's singles was number one (during part of 2002 and 2001) and she is the 2002 Australian Open champion.
